Wolf at my door
‘Wolf at my door – a story of lupus, loss and love’ was a memoir released by Palabra Publishing just before the August 2021 Covid lockdown in New Zealand. This is my first significant publication for general distribution and is in the Body, Mind, Spirit genre.
Preview passage
‘It is time for X-rays. I silently wince, as every adjustment wounds me. After some days…my curiosity takes over and I ponder my treatment and the paraphernalia surrounding me. Apparently, the fractured pelvis I sustained in the accident is just one of several injuries and lupus, the wolf, has once more taken possession of my vulnerable and broken body. I yield to the procedure silently. Because I am voiceless, I have no other choice. If I could rail and scream accusingly at God, I would be shrieking out my rage and distress.’
Readers' reviews
- ‘This story is a journey of resilience from darkness to light. It is a journey of bravery, of spirituality, and the finding of strength in one’s family.’
Tina Shaw
- ‘Reading your book is like a journey... a journey with you.. and yes, it can get emotional. I found myself taking pauses. But it is also a story of courage, strength, love and inspiration. I would like to add that it takes a lot of courage to write your story and share it.. and let yourself be vulnerable.’
C.Tuason
- ‘Lupus is the most mysterious, debilitating disease and this searingly honest, very readable book is a rare and welcome treasure to the library of medical challenges. Against these, Elena Philp dances and works as loving wife, mother and grandmother, and battling more personal tragedy than most.’
Nan Miller
- ‘Wow! ... I was incredibly impressed by the absolutely authentic narration of Elena's struggles with the stark realities of life and self. I actually found it to be very positive. Her inner strength and resilience are inspiring as are the strength and support she receives (and recognises) from those who love her! Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down!’
J. Stevenson
- ‘Her story is riveting because she tells it in short, hard-hitting bursts. She writes with direct raw honesty, with anger, love and compassion…’
